Ecommerce Website Development Cost in India (2026): What Drives the Price

What actually moves the price of an online store in India: catalogue, variants, payments, shipping, GST invoicing and integrations, plus the running costs most quotes leave out.

IN THIS ARTICLE (8 Sections)

Ask five agencies to quote for an online store and you may get five numbers that are far apart. That is usually not because someone is cheating. Each quote assumes a different store: a different number of products, different payment and delivery rules, and a different amount of custom work.

This guide explains what drives ecommerce website development cost in India, how platform, package and custom builds compare, which running costs come after launch, and how to compare two quotes fairly. We use our own published package as a worked example.

Quick answer: Ecommerce website development cost in India depends mostly on catalogue size and variants, payment and COD rules, courier integration, GST invoicing, custom design and links to systems such as Tally or an ERP. A packaged single-brand store sits at the lower end; B2B pricing, marketplaces and ERP sync push the cost into lakhs. EthicsComputer's store package starts from ₹32,000. Budget separately for gateway, courier and hosting costs.

What drives ecommerce website development cost

Most of the price is set by seven decisions. Settle them before you ask for quotes and the quotes you get back become comparable.

Cost driverWhy it changes the priceDecide this before you ask
Catalogue and variantsFifty products with no options is a small job. Three thousand SKUs with sizes, colours and separate stock per variant need bulk upload tools, filters and careful data work. How many SKUs, which variants, and who enters the data.
PaymentsOne gateway with UPI, cards and net banking is standard. Several gateways, partial COD, EMI options or wallets add integration and testing time.Which gateway, which payment methods, and your COD rules.
ShippingA flat delivery charge is simple. Weight or pin-code based rates, automatic airway bill (AWB) numbers, tracking updates and return handling need courier API work.Which courier or aggregator, and how delivery is charged.
GST invoicingInvoices need your GSTIN, HSN codes, place of supply and the correct CGST and SGST or IGST split. B2B buyers want their own GSTIN on the invoice, and returns need credit notes.Whether you sell to consumers, businesses or both, and your HSN list.
DesignA customised ready theme costs less than a design made from scratch for your brand. How much of the look must be unique to you.
IntegrationsStock sync with Tally or an ERP, a CRM, SMS or WhatsApp order alerts and marketplace sync each add work that must be built and tested.Which systems the store must talk to, and in which direction.
Accounts and pricing rulesCustomer logins, wishlists and reviews are common. Dealer logins, tiered pricing and credit limits are B2B features and cost more.Who buys from you, and on what terms.

Platform, package or custom build

There are four broad routes. Each one moves money between the one-time build and the monthly bill.

  • Hosted platform: a low upfront cost, then a monthly subscription, paid apps and, on some plans, a platform transaction fee. It suits a standard store, but checkout, invoicing and pricing logic can only change as far as the platform allows.
  • Open-source store such as WooCommerce: no subscription, but you pay for hosting, a theme, paid plugins and someone to keep them updated. More plugins mean more maintenance.
  • Packaged build: a fixed list of features at a fixed price. It suits a single-brand store whose needs match the list.
  • Custom build: written around your rules. It makes sense for B2B pricing, dealer portals, multi-vendor marketplaces or heavy ERP integration, where platform fees and plugin limits start to cost more than the build itself.

For a market view, Hostinger's India guide to ecommerce website cost (updated 5 March 2026) puts a basic store built with templates or a builder at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000, and a mid-level store with custom design and integrations at ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh. Treat any published range as a starting point. The seven drivers above decide where your store actually falls.

Running costs after launch

The build is paid once. The costs below continue every month or year, and most build quotes do not include them:

  • Domain and hosting: a yearly domain renewal and monthly or yearly hosting, or the platform subscription.
  • Payment gateway fees: a percentage of each transaction that varies by payment method, with GST charged on the fee. Rates change, so check the current pricing page of the gateway you choose.
  • Courier charges: paid per shipment, plus return-to-origin (RTO) charges when COD parcels are refused.
  • Message charges: SMS and WhatsApp order alerts are billed by the provider per message or conversation.
  • Apps, plugins and licences: renewals for paid extensions, themes or search tools.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups and security patches. An unmaintained store puts customer data at risk. Our website maintenance page explains what a care plan covers.
  • Marketing: product photography, SEO and ads. A store nobody finds sells nothing, whatever it cost to build.

Worked example: the EthicsComputer store package from ₹32,000

Our e-commerce development package starts from ₹32,000 and covers a standard single-brand store:

  • A product catalogue with SKU variations and inventory tracking.
  • Payments through Razorpay or Cashfree, including UPI.
  • Shiprocket or Delhivery hooks for shipping.
  • SMS or WhatsApp order confirmations.
  • Abandoned-cart recovery.

Turnaround is typically two to three weeks once you provide the product photos and the SKU catalogue. Plan your product data early, because the clock starts when those arrive.

Work outside that list is scoped and quoted separately in writing: dealer pricing and credit limits, a multi-vendor marketplace, two-way sync with Tally or an ERP, a companion mobile app or a fully custom design. Every project comes with a mutual NDA, a written specification, milestone sign-off, and full source code and IP handover on completion. Gateway, courier and message charges are paid to those providers and are not part of any build price.

How to compare two ecommerce quotes

  1. Same catalogue: check that both quotes assume the same SKU count and variants, and say who uploads them.
  2. Payment flows in writing: the gateway, payment methods, COD rules, refunds, and how payment confirmation is verified on the server.
  3. Shipping: which courier or aggregator, whether labels and tracking are automatic, and how returns are recorded.
  4. A sample GST invoice: ask to see one from a store they have built.
  5. Ownership: the domain, hosting, gateway merchant account and courier account in your business name, and source code handed over at the end.
  6. After launch: the bug-fix warranty period and the monthly price of maintenance.
  7. Tax on the quote: whether the figure includes GST, and whether you will receive a GST invoice.

If one quote is far lower than the rest, look for what it leaves out. COD rules, the invoice format and courier integration are common gaps, and they tend to return later as extra charges.
